Fifty Years in OmanWe have just had our 50 year party in Oman, for which we wrote a 240 page commemorative book. Most of the retired engineers who sent us contributions were contacted via brothersreunited. In fact without your web page the book would not have been published. Thankyou very much.Received from John Edwards ObituariesThierry LeroyThierry was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident 25th July 2007 in Singapore. From the Straits Times: A General manager died after his motorcycle collided with a taxi at 8am on Wednesday. French national Thierry Raymond Philippe Leroy was travelling towards Pioneer Road in the second lane when the taxi, which was in the first lane, tried to make a U-turn. Mr Leroy, 48, who suffered head and chest injuries in the collision, died at the scene. The taxi driver was arrested for allegedly commiting a rash act resulting in death. Gone but always remembered. In the ten years we knew Thierry, both in the work place and in family life, all I can say is he was one of the most gifted and pleasant people one could hope to meet in life. A great loss indeed. May he RIP. David Sale (Dave)Lost a man full of smile, never once have i seen Thierry loosing his head....he was always full of smile, he's an Officer and a Gentleman. We all miss you THIERRY... From the Pennwell Books website: - Thorough understanding of the entire natural gas value chain, including detailed discussion of emerging sectors such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Gas-To-Liquid (GTL), and Coal Bed Methane (CBM)
- Gas terms, conversion units, commercialization and marketing issues
- Current and emerging international players, and the latest in technology development
I would certainly recommend it as required reading for new staff, and some of you old hands might find a few 'a-ha' moments hidden in there as well. 20,000 Profiles What a landmark! After almost exactly 5 years in operation we have passed the magical 20,000 profile mark! The growth was fastest in the first 6 months, but since then has settled to a steady rate that barely wavers with time:
Many thanks to all our loyal members who have made this possible.
Education Details In line with our growing use as a recruitment site, we have added a new right page section 'Education Details'. Here you can enter your College and degree details (if you choose) and of course search for others who went to the same university as you ect. Entering this data is entirely optional of course but if you do want to present a more complete profile will allow potential employers to better evaluate your suitability.
Palustran Schools The Palustran Schools were the long-time precursors to the RISE program. I had the following information from Doug Wyman:
The classes were held in the conference room just behind the reception area at 42 Rue St Dominique by Andre Palustran (sp?), an old retainer of Schlumberger from just after WWII till late in the 70's, if I recall.
He chain-smoked Gaulloise cigarettes,... in class, wore a blue lab coat and exclaimed "note it!" to highlight what would be on the test. The high pitch and intonation of his voice echoes to this day. He was on first-name terms with M. Jean Riboud and, if I recall, also wore the the special insiginia of the Resistance, on his lapel (I could be wrong about the latter). "correct learning center"... my word! Andre Palustran invented the learning center!
I'll try to get some more historical information, later... Doug Wyman
Does anyone else have memories of these early training schools? Would be great to do a feature on them.
L'Atlantide, Paris Way back in the mists of time, when I attended my wireline training school (ITC-35 in Medan, Indonesia) one of the larger than life characters was Marzuq Hamichi from Algeria. After training our paths never crossed again - we worked different locations and many years later I heard that he had left the company leaving me with no onward contact. It was largely to reconnect with such characters that I started this site in 2002 - yet even after a couple of years when most of my old friends had been located Marzug remained elusive. Finally I received a tip that he was still running a Berbere restuarant in Paris two years ago and we managed to meet up for a drink and a long chat about old times. Then last October when I took my family to Paris we went for a fabulous lunch at his restaurant - L'Atlantide, which specialises in Berbere and North African food. I heartily recommend it to all, and please give my regards to Marzuq!

Happy Australia Day Holger Lubotzki sent me this amazing photograph of Australia day celebrations on the beach in Freemantle, Perth last year:
Why you wear the badge...
Gratefully received from Frank Kelly
Safety Glass in Third World Showers I received the following shortly after the glass in my own shower cubicle cracked - on inspection found that it was indeed regular window glass. For those of you in developing nations, something to be aware of!
Dear All - a word of warning... Today is my first day back in Jakarta after a major accident (I am now approaching the quantum level of "incidents" for one person!). Last Thursday night, was in the shower when my wife was trying to come in and join me. As she was pushing on the glass door to come in, the door shattered in half (unexplainable other than it was obviously already weakened at the handle?). The door split in half, the top half of which came down on my left forearm and split 2/3 of my arm open to the bone. All muscles, tendons and nerves were severed, including my artery. Suffice to say, had a pumper and repainted my bathroom a distinct crimson shade! After tourniquet and enormous direct pressure applied (Thank God my Father in Law, Uncle and Mother in Law were there to help Corrie!), I was carried out to the car and whisked to the SOS Clinic for a 4 hour stabilization with a subsequent airlift to Singapore for emergency surgery. End result, 3-4 pints low with a screwed arm. Found also 7 lacerations to left side of the body and a severed tendon on my large left toe (+20% of the bone was excised!)... Was in Singapore for the last six days recuperating and am now back in hobbled state. Whew! All of that typing with one hand too! True lesson to be learned (and please pass this on to any and ALL of your friends) : CHECK THE GLASS IN YOUR HOUSE!!! The shower door was not "safety glass" / Tempered or laminated. The door was straight 1/2 or 2/3 inch glass (like a glass cup). Once it had fractured along a pre-existing weakpoint (we think), the door shattered into multiple razor edged projectiles. If I had not pushed Corrie out of the way, I may have ended up an injured widower! This is no joke, take absolute care to have all your glass surfaces checked and replaced with either plexiglass or safety glass. When I think off all the times my kids have been in the shower also, well, I can not even start to describe my fears. Life is amazing and an incredible gift! To have lost it because of a shoddy non-code shower door would have been an enormous waste - I sincerely hope you all take the time needed to protect yourselves and your loved ones - check your glass surfaces! I am now on a 3-6month recuperation and hope to be 100% as soon as possible.

British Technical Terms For those of you forced to work in the cold UK, the following dictionary of technical terms may help decipher some of the unfamiliar language!
TESTICULATING Waving your arms around and talking bollocks.
BLAMESTORMING Sitting round in a group, discussing why a deadline was missed or a Project failed, and who was responsible.
SEAGULL MANAGER A manager who flies in, makes a lot of noise, craps on everything, and then leaves.
ASSMOSIS The process by which people seem to absorb success and advancement by sucking up to the boss rather than working hard.
SALMON DAY The experience of spending an entire day swimming upstream only to get screwed and die.
CUBE FARM An office filled with cubicles.
PRAIRIE DOGGING When someone yells or drops something loudly in a cube farm, and people's heads pop up over the walls to see what's going on. (This also applies to applause for a promotion because there may be cake.)
PERCUSSIVE MAINTENANCE The fine art of whacking the crap out of an electronic device to get it to work again.
ADMINISPHERE The rarefied organisational layers beginning just above the rank and file. Decisions that fall from the "adminisphere" are often profoundly inappropriate or irrelevant to the problems they were designed to solve. This is often affiliated with the dreaded "administrivia" - needless paperwork and processes.
404 Someone who's clueless. From the World Wide Web error message "404 Not Found" meaning that the requested document could not be located.
OH - NO SECOND That minuscule fraction of time in which you realize that you've just made a BIG mistake (e.g. you've hit 'reply all').
JOHNNY-NO-STARS A young man of substandard intelligence, the typical adolescent who works in a burger restaurant. The 'no-stars' comes from the badges displaying stars that staff at fast-food restaurants often wear to show their level of training.
MONKEY BATH A bath so hot, that when lowering yourself in, you go: "Oo! Oo! Oo! Aa! Aa! Aa!".
