Post your CV on Brothers

Did you know that you can post your CV on BrothersReunited. We won't send it to prospective employers - but people looking to check out your experience who are ex-Slb themselves will often take a look on Brothers, and so if you are job hunting, or just taking a break, why not add your CV to your profile?
GE To Spin Off Baker Hughes

In another shakeup for Baker Hughes, GE announced in June its intention to spin the oil services group off as part of its drastic restructuring,. This news comes less than 12 months after the acquisition was completed. More detals here.
Photo Scanning Service

Got a shoebox of faded photo prints in the attic from your days in the oilfield. It might be worth sending them off to a professional photo scanning service - before they fade away completely!

Here is a review of such services in the US. Most countries have similar services, and here in Asia it is possible to get it done far cheaper still. If you do get your memories digitised in bulk let us know and we will help with the import into BrothersReunited!
Investment Opportunities in Indonesian Oil & Gas Prospects

I know of a couple of reputable and experienced professionals here in Indonesia who are looking for investors to develop promising but overlooked Oil & Gas concessions. If any of the Brothers are in this field or know somebody who is please get in touch.
Schlumberger and Subsea7 announce plans to form a joint venture

Joint Ventures have often preceded outright takeovers in the past - so as it devests from Seismic it seems that Schlumberger is doubling down on its subsea capabilities:

Greetings

As you can see it is back to our rather dated newsletter format. MailChimp, who we used last time, kicked us off their platform due to the high proportion of failed email deliveries - a function of the number of layoffs in our industry in general and Schlumberger in particular over the last couple of years.

In this issue we have memories from Colin Whittaker and Ron Mobed, industry news from Baker, SubSea7, Weatherford and Schlumberger and details of Alumni reunions past and future.

Enjoy!
Ewan

Wireline Memories from 1982: Ron Mobed

Another in our occasional series of personal memories of a long lost oil field, except that these were written at the time to clarify the nature of the job for a college careers advisor. This one by Ron Mobed:

The first in our series from Marvin Fauré was published a year ago - you can find the handwritten version Here or the more legible (but perhaps not 100% accurate) transcript Here.

Colin Whittaker

Colin Whittaker has posted a fantastic memoir of his early days in the Middle East on the Schlumberger Stories Wiki. An excerpt:

Starting in Schlumberger

During the hiring interview at 1 Kingsway in London, there was a seemingly innocent question asking where you would most like to work in the world and where you would least like to work in the world, because back in the early 1980s we all started off working international in Wireline. So I naively requested Africa or the Far East and voiced a dislike for the Middle East. As you can guess, I was then posted to the Middle East and couldn't leave for the next seven years.

The day arrived, I had a one way ticket to Dubai (business class) and no visa in my passport, which did leave me slightly worried. It was the middle of December and it began to snow in Heathrow, so the flight was delayed for many hours. With time to kill, I wondered if there might be anyone else leaving the UK to join Schlumberger on the same flight. I'm 6'1" and a graduate from Imperial College, so when I saw someone of the same height, greater girth, and wearing an Imperial College Rugby Club shirt I had my target. He jumped when I challenged him and I guessed he was every bit as nervous as I was. (This was Dave Stear and we finished up at the same training school.)

Peter Windsor Stories

While on the excellent Schlumberger Stories Wiki, check out these brilliant memories of Peter Windsor recounted by Mike Chambers!

Again an excerpt to whet your appetite:

Paris, Friday June 13th 1975

We eighteen "lucky" new hires for Schlumberger Wireline made first introductions to each other in the hotel lobby before taking taxis to SPES Headquarters at 42 rue St. Dominique to sign our first employment contracts on Friday the Thirteenth. I (the author) was being introduced to a Frenchman, Hervé Colin (#5), and because I was an American, I had early trouble with all the different accents. I had to keep asking Hervé to repeat his name more and more slowly. Finally Hervé said his name very loudly as "Air-Vey Col-In”. Then Peter came over and introduced himself to me as "Pee-Tah Win-Zah". Peter was incredibly quick witted and wickedly funny!

Schlumberger Museum

From Bruno de Leotard:

Hello all, let me relay un message from Schlumberger Museum in France. For sure lot of us may support the request!

Dear all,

For around two years, we have been working on a museum development project on the site of Crèvecoeur Castle and the Schlumberger Museum. Currently, I am personally involved in devising a new visitor itinerary for the Schlumberger Museum.

Our aim is for the human dimension to be at the very heart of this new presentation. To achieve this, we are looking for any objects (equipment, tools, personal belongings, etc.) and any documents (publications, photographs, videos, etc.) bearing witness to the Schlumberger story (the family, company, its subsidiaries, etc.). This new project is in its early days and, as such, no deadline has yet been set, neither have any restrictions with regard to its potential themes.

Any museum project is born from the collection it comprises and we would be delighted if you could help us to enhance our Schlumberger collection and archives. We therefore thank you in advance for sharing this message as much as possible. Your help is always precious.

With our best regards,
Alix ALDUC-BARBAT

Schlumberger now has a Frac fleet to match Halliburtons

Weatherford has sold its US pressure pumping and pump-down perforating assets to Schlumberger for $430 million in cash, abruptly ending a planned joint venture that was to begin operations on 1 January.

The parties agreed to revised deal terms that reflect an asset sale, abandoning the previously announced OneStim joint venture that had received US Department of Justice approval a month ago.

Schlumberger will take ownership of Weatherford's US pressure pumping and pump-down perforating related facilities and supplier and customer contracts. Additionally, 100 Weatherford employees associated with the business will transfer to Schlumberger.

Weatherford will retain its well completions portfolio, manufacturing capability and supply chain, and use the cash to pay down debt.

Schlumberger To Exit Land, Marine Seismic Acquisition Business

As they expand in one segment they shrink in another...

Schlumberger Ltd. has decided to exit the land and marine seismic acquisition business, which has been battered by the downturn and faces an uncertain future.

The business segment is the Houston-based company’s only product line that fails to meet future return expectations, according to Schlumberger CEO Paal Kibsgaard.

“This has not been an easy decision to make. But following a careful evaluation of the current market trend, our customers’ buying habits and our current and projected financial return, it is an unfortunate and inevitable outcome,” Kibsgaard said during the company’s earnings call on Jan. 19.
